Student Spotlight: Leonel Marciaga
February 2010
Edwin Leonel Marciaga, a 24 year old from La Chorrera, Panama is a student at SENDAS, the Youth Pastor in his local church of La Pesa #1, and the Coordinator of Alfalit for the country of Panama. He is truly making a difference in his world.
Leonel accepted Christ as Savior at the age of twelve and has continued serving the Lord faithfully since that time. He attends the University in Panama and is nearing completion of a degree in Community Development. Additionally, he lacks only one class in his degree in Theology and will graduate in November from the Nazarene Seminary of the Americas in Costa Rica.

Leonel began teaching courses with Alfalit in 2007. Alfalit is a faith based non-profit organization whose slogan is “Eliminating Human Suffering Caused by Illiteracy.” The organization provides services in twenty-two countries on four continents. In February of 2008, Leonel was named the National Coordinator for Panama.
Alfalit has nine Regional Coordinators in Panama, and Leonel works with these leaders in equipping and training in various areas including Literacy, Basic Education, Preschool, Community Development, Preventative Health and Disease Prevention.

Leonel states, “I have a desire to bring evangelism and compassion to the communities.” He starts at home, working in his local church with the children and youth. The La Pesa #1 church has a preschool, a dining hall and food program, and even music classes for the more than 300 young people in the community.

He shares that his local church has made a huge impact on his life as he has worked in nearly every ministry area, which has been great training for his work in faith-based community development.
Leonel’s future is bright as he continues his Seminary education and works beside both local and country leaders to help in Panamanian communities where the spiritual and educational needs are vast.
