Peruvian Education Center Begins Third Round of Courses
May 2010

The third cycle of master’s courses began at the Nazarene Theological Seminary in Chiclayo, Peru with the course “Biblical, Theological and Historical Basis of Mission.”  Professor Jorge Banos taught the course which lasted for two weeks.

Thirteen students attended the course from many different locations within Peru: Lima (12 hours of travel), Amazonas-Peru (9 hours), and Piura (4 hours) as well as locations closer to the Seminary.  The students who traveled great distances stayed at the Seminary during the two-week class.

It is surprising to see the effort these students made to continue preparing themselves for ministry.  All of the students in the course are Pastors or leaders in the local church, and they are very pleased to put into practice all they learned so that they can bless their communities.

One student in the class, Jose Rivera, Pastor of the Nazarene Church in Bagua Grande Amazonas said, “I know that all we are learning in these courses will be put into action in our locations so that the Reign of God and His mission will be a present reality.”

Another student, Luisa Diaz, Pastor of the Wesleyan Church in Zana said, “This course has been very important and challenging to me and all the Pastors. It is a call to examine our mission according to the scriptures and to apply it to our context.”

The teaching methods were varied with teacher lectures, student presentations, debates, class discussion of experiences and video presentations.  All of these were enriching for the students. Now the students are able to understand from a new perspective, expanding their vision of what God has for their ministry.

Jose David Acosta, Coordinator of Compassion for the SAM Region and class participant who travelled 12 hours to take the course shared the following. “This course has given me new understanding of the Biblical-theological and historical basis of the mission of the church.  The master’s program helps us to be more aware of the changes that are happening in the world and especially in the church.  This class has been very enriching.”

Professor Jorge Banos also taught a Seminary workshop to fourteen students who have completed their courses but have yet to complete their final graduation project.  All of these students are graduation candidates for the year 2011 and in this year will complete their thesis projects.
