The SENDAS Assembly is a very important event for the administration and faculty of the Seminary. It is a time to reflect on the past year, prepare reports for all programs and think about future goals.
Bachelor and License Programs Begin Virtual Classes
September 2011
In the month of July, the first videoconference and online courses were offered in the Bachelor and License degree programs. Two video conference units were installed: one in the Poas Center, Costa Rica and the other in Chanis, Panama. These two centers met by Internet with the class taught at SENDAS.
News from SENDAS' Graduate Studies Office
August 2011
There is much good news to share this year from the Graduate Office at the Seminary. The programs are growing as the teaching methods are expanding, and in December of 2011 there will be a large group of graduates walking across stages all across Central and South America as they graduate from their respective master’s program.

CALL Language School Prepares Missionaries

The Christian Academy of Language and Learning (CALL) began offering Spanish classes in the fall of 2009 with the intention of helping pastors and leaders who desired to minister in Spanish in their local communities in the United States and beyond. Since 2009, the program has continually held Spanish classes on the SENDAS campus, offering an immersion experience to its students.

SENDAS Teaches Master's Course at Cuban Seminary

For two weeks in March, Dr. Dorothy Bullon, professor at the Nazarene Seminary of the Americas in Costa Rica, taught at the Beyond Borders center that functions at the Cuban Nazarene Theological Seminary, the course entitled “Biblical, Theological and Historical Basis of Mission.” The course is a core class in the Master of Arts in Religion program in Theology with emphasis in the Mission of the Church.

SENDAS Receives Work and Witness Trip from West Virginia
March 2011
A Work and Witness team from the West Virginia North District arrived to the Seminary in mid-March to complete the work on the Cenizaro Dining Hall. The group of 21 people worked for four days replacing the roof, installing new electric and hanging the drop ceiling.

Master's Students Take Mission Trip to Panama
February 2011
On February 21, 2011, Professor Jorge Banos and three students from the Master’s in Intercultural Studies program packed their bags for a five-day trip to an indigenous area just outside of Changuinola, Panama. The purpose of the trip was to gain experience ministering in another culture and to support the Church of the Nazarene in La Gloria, Panama.

SENDAS and Evangelical Alliance Sign New Agreement

The Nazarene Seminary of the Americas (SENDAS) and the Evangelical Alliance of Costa Rica (Federacion Alianza Evangelica Costarricense) have joined forces to provide pastors and leaders in Costa Rica the opportunity to continue their theological studies. The agreement was signed on February 9, 2011 on the SENDAS campus.

SENDAS Orientacion Day a Success

The Seminary held an Orientation Day on January 26 for students new to SENDAS or students new to the online course format. There were approximately 40 people in attendance with another 19 people connected by Internet through virtual streaming.
The Orientation included two training sessions. Professor Franlym Peña led the first session, sharing about the various programs and study options offered. Esdras Jimenez, Coordinator of the Virtual Seminary program, led the second session. He gave an excellent presentation of the use of the online platform Angel to help prepare the students for their first online course.

Sabbatical CALL Experience: Pastor Henry Siems

Pastor Henry Siems, from the Stillwater, Oklahoma First Church of the Nazarene, was ready for a sabbatical break. Many churches offer their pastors a sabbatical after seven years of pastoral service, and Henry’s church offered him the month of January 2011 to reflect, study and prepare his heart and mind for the future.
He chose to spend three of the four weeks in San Jose, Costa Rica studying Spanish for three hours each weekday with CALL and reflecting and praying on God’s Word the other hours.

Virtual Seminary Finds Success in Latin America

In response to the advances in educational technology in the last few years, and the opportunities this offers for theological and ministerial training, an agreement was reached in February 2010 between Seminario Nazareno de las Americas in San Jose, Costa Rica, and Seminario Teologico Nazareno del Cono Sur in Pilar, Buenos Aires, Argentina, to become "hub seminaries" in a joint project for the development of online theological education with excellence in Latin America.

School of Leadership: Changing the MAC Region One Church at a Time

The Theological Education Ministry of the MAC Region has developed a new training program called School of Leadership whose objective is to take quality basic theological education to the church members. This program has five general courses and six specialty ministry courses that the student can choose from according to their gifts and calling.

SENDAS Celebrates Graduation and 40th Anniversary

On November 20, the Nazarene Seminary of the Americas celebrated two major events: Graduation 2010 and the 40th Anniversary of the Seminary. The event began at 5:30 pm with a graduation service in the Seminary Chapel where more than1 50 people gathered together and the celebration continued afterwards with a special evening meal event.

Videoconference Courses Begin in Coban, Guatemala

On August 9, 2010 the Nazarene Bible Institute in Coban, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala began its first videoconference course offered through SENDAS. The course is entitled “Premarital Counseling” and it is the first course to be offered in Coban in the Master’s of Science in Religion program with emphasis in Family Counseling.

Student Spotlight: Cristobal Correa Rondan

Cristobal Correa Rondan, from Peru, graduated from SENDAS in 2009. He currently minsters with Extreme Nazarene, training missionaries in Peru. Just before coming to SENDAS, he married Noemi Salvador en 2008, and together they continued their studies in the master’s program.

SENDAS Alumni Reunion

On Friday July 2, an informal alumni reunion was held on the Nazarene Seminary of the Americas campus. Rev. Hermes Cayalo, currently the Vice–President of Academics at the Evangelical University in Bolivia, planned the event. Since he was traveling to Costa Rica, he made the effort to contact a group of SENDAS alumni from the decade of the ‘90s to participate in a luncheon. The alumni who attended the event are currently living in Argentina, Bolivia and Costa Rica.

Devotion Retreat Held on SENDAS Campus

On July 9 -10, the Devotion Retreat led by Danilo Montero, a well-known Christian singer and songwriter, was held on the Seminary campus. The Costa Rica Central District Church of the Nazarene sponsored the event. The purpose of the retreat was “to strengthen our link with Jesus through spiritual disciplines” and the vision was “that together we will awaken the desire for a genuine and constant search of God.”

David Gonzalez, a student at SENDAS originally from Mexico, has been ministering in the Global NYI office at Nazarene Headquarters since 2007. He served six years as a missionary with the MAC Region, living in Guatemala and ministering with NYI.

CALL Language School Holds Summer Intensive Courses

The Christian Academy of Language and Learning (CALL) began a month of intensive Spanish study on the SENDAS campus on June 21 with the arrival of six students from the USA desiring to improve Spanish fluency to more effectively minister in their local church and community.

School of Leadership

The Theological Education Ministry for the MAC Region has recently developed a new training program called School of Leadership. The objective of this program is to bring basic theological education to local church members with excellence. This program has five general courses and six specialized courses from which the student may choose based on their ministerial call. The courses are designed in simple language for both the student and the teacher.

SENDAS in Residence: Student Testimonies Available Online

In February of 2010, the master’s students arrived on campus for 15 months of intense study. They represent four countries: Mexico, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. They are studying in one of two programs: Family Counseling or Intercultural Studies. In May, the students’ testimonies were posted on the SENDAS website on the Project SOS webpage. Each of them have amazing stories of how God has guided them to study and to prepare for ministry.

SENDAS Accomplishes Two Milestones

For many years, the Nazarene Seminary of the Americas has had the goal of beginning online classes as well as video conference courses. During the months of April and May, both of these dreams were realized. The professors and the students are very excited to use these new teaching and learning technologies. These technologies give the opportunity for more students to take courses with the most qualified professors while interacting with students from many countries.

Nazarene Bible Institute in Nicaragua Receives Work and Witness Team

A Work and Witness team from Bellville, Ohio recently visited the Rivas area with the purpose of helping with the ongoing needs at the Bible Institute in San Carlos. The Bible Institute is located on the banks of Lake Nicaragua and the center is used both for theology training and for Nicaragua South District events.

Church Planters from MAC South take courses at SENDAS

For two weeks in April, Church Planters and other evangelistic leaders from the countries of Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama participated in Intensive Seminary courses on SENDAS campus. These leaders are part of the Regional church planting strategy focused on raising up leaders who work full-time in outreach and evangelism to plant new cell groups and churches in their districts.

SENDAS holds Video Conference Training

Dr. Bob Woodruff, Coordinator of Educational Development for the Church of the Nazarene, directed a training course in Video Conference Education for SENDAS professors and six additional Sub Centers that offer the Master’s program. All were connected by Internet on April 20 and 21. Dr. Woodruff, who lives in Perth, Australia, has many responsibilities, one of which is to develop and expand the role of videoconference classrooms on International Nazarene campuses.

Master's Courses Begin at SENDAS Main Campus

On February 22, ten students in the master's program began courses on the main campus in San Jose, Costa Rica. The program lasts for sixteen months. There are four students in the Master of Science in Religion program with emphasis in Orientation of the Family and six students in the same program with emphasis in Intercultural Studies.

Student Spotlight: Lorena del Socorro Bernal Garcia

Lorena del Socorro Bernal Garcia, from Chiapas, Mexico, came to study at SENDAS with her husband in 2008. Both Lorena and her husband are medical doctors and they have three children. It was not an easy decision for them to leave behind their careers for one year, move their family to another culture in order to study at SENDAS, but the desire to learn more about God and better serve Him was their motivation for the move.
